A dividend is a cash payment a company makes to shareholders, typically on a quarterly basis, as a share of its profits. Dividend yield shows how much income you earn relative to the stock price — a $1.00 annual dividend on a $25 stock is a 4% yield. The payout ratio indicates what fraction of earnings the company pays out; ratios below 60% are generally considered sustainable.
