What QQQ Is

The Nasdaq-100 — tech, growth, and AI's biggest winners in one fund

QQQ tracks the Nasdaq-100 index — the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq. It is technology-heavy (~60% tech) but also includes mega-cap growth companies across consumer discretionary (Amazon, Tesla) and communication services (Alphabet, Meta), making it a broader growth vehicle than a pure tech ETF. QQQ includes names that XLK excludes — GOOGL, META, AMZN — and has historically outperformed the S&P 500 during technology bull markets.

What It Tracks

Nasdaq-100 Index — the 100 largest non-financial companies by modified market cap listed on the Nasdaq. Unlike the S&P 500, there is no profitability requirement for inclusion. Rebalanced quarterly with annual reconstitution.

Why Own QQQ

QQQ gives you concentrated exposure to the dominant growth companies of the digital economy in a single fund. It captures AI's biggest winners — NVDA, MSFT, GOOGL, META — plus AMZN, TSLA, and AVGO. For investors who want to overweight technology and growth versus the broader market without picking individual stocks, QQQ is the most popular vehicle.

The Case For and Against

Strengths

  • Includes GOOGL, META, AMZN, and TSLA — major growth names that XLK excludes by sector classification
  • $350B AUM and one of the most actively traded ETFs globally — exceptional liquidity
  • Has significantly outperformed the S&P 500 during technology bull markets of 2010–2025
  • No financial sector — avoids cyclicality and regulatory risk of banks and insurers

Trade-offs

  • 0.20% expense ratio — more expensive than SPY (0.0945%) and significantly more than XLK/FTEC (0.08%)
  • Heavy concentration in top 10 names (~50% of fund), amplifying single-stock risk
  • More volatile than the S&P 500 — fell ~33% in 2022 vs the S&P 500's ~18%
  • No small/mid-cap or international exposure

Who It Suits

Growth-oriented investors who want concentrated exposure to the largest U.S. tech and growth companies — including Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon that sector-based tech ETFs miss — and who accept higher volatility for potentially higher long-term returns.

Price returns only, computed from 6960 daily closes — before commissions, spreads and tax, and excluding any distributions, so a fund that pays income has earned more than these figures show. Annualised figures appear only for windows longer than about 13 months. This fund has a share split on record; figures are computed from unadjusted closes and should be re-verified. QQQ is trading inside its 52-week range. A high reading is not a sell signal and a low one is not a bargain — it only says where the last year's prices sit relative to today.

What the Expense Ratio Costs

QQQ charges 0.20% a year. Deducted daily from net asset value, never billed separately, so it is easy to miss. On a flat $10,000 position — holding the price steady to isolate the fee from the returns — it compounds to:

After 1 Year
$20
0.2% of capital
After 5 Years
$100
1.0% of capital
After 10 Years
$198
2.0% of capital

An illustration, not a projection: in reality the fee is charged against a balance that moves, so the dollar cost rises with a fund that grows and falls with one that shrinks. It also excludes bid-ask spread, brokerage commission and — for funds structured as commodity pools or partnerships — any additional filing complexity.

QQQ — Common Questions

QQQ vs XLK — which is the better tech ETF?

They solve different problems. XLK (0.08%) is a pure S&P 500 technology sector ETF that excludes GOOGL, META, and AMZN. QQQ (0.20%) tracks the Nasdaq-100 and includes those names, making it a broader growth vehicle. QQQ is more expensive but more comprehensive if a growth portfolio is the goal. If pure technology sector tracking is the objective, XLK is cheaper and more focused.

What is the Nasdaq-100 vs the Nasdaq Composite?

The Nasdaq Composite includes all ~3,000+ stocks listed on Nasdaq. The Nasdaq-100 is only the top 100 non-financial Nasdaq companies. QQQ tracks the Nasdaq-100. The Nasdaq Composite is tracked by ONEQ, but QQQ's Nasdaq-100 is the widely benchmarked growth index.

What does QQQ actually track?

Invesco QQQ Trust is a technology ETF from Invesco. Its largest disclosed position is Apple Inc at 8.16% of the fund, and its heaviest sector exposure is Technology at 58.01%.

How much does QQQ charge?

0.20% per year, deducted from net asset value rather than billed to you. On $10,000 held for ten years with a flat price that is about $198.

How has QQQ performed?

Over the past year the price rose 7.3%, and since 1999-03-10 it is +1184.9%. Its worst peak-to-trough fall on record is -83.0%, between Mar 27, 2000 and Oct 9, 2002. Those are price returns as of 2026-11-06 and exclude distributions.

How large is QQQ?

About $463.8B in assets, trading roughly 37.41M shares a day over the last three months. Size and volume matter mainly for how cheaply you can get in and out: a thinly traded fund costs more in spread than its expense ratio suggests.

Is QQQ right for me?

That depends on what the rest of your portfolio already holds, not on this fund's recent returns. Nothing on this page is a recommendation — check the issuer's prospectus and, if it matters to your taxes or retirement, a licensed adviser.
